Below are some general guidelines for the selection of Bonsai containers, relative to the style and type of tree.

Informal upright style (slant, informal upright) - informal pots (round or oval, soft cornered rectangles)

Formal upright style - geometric, hard edges with definite corners, feet

Clump style - lotus, slab, shallow squares

Cascade style- deeper squares, and rectangles - hex for semi-cascade style work well.

Forest style - shallow trays and slabs

Literati style - hand thrown, rough finished, shallow bowls

Deciduous trees - glazed pots

Flowering trees and Fruiting trees - brighter, more colorful glazes

Evergreen trees - unglazed, rough glazed or stone-finished pots

Mame and Shito - Smaller sized bonsai can often be planted in more

colorful containers, irrespective of other guidelines.

What would be the best to plant a small Bonsai Tree in? I recently made my first Bonsai Tree purchase, and would like the plant to grow healthy and be taken care of correctly. Is there any certain type of pot or containment that is the best for Bonsai Trees in general (or specifically for each type?)

Hello,

The literal meaning of bonsai is 'plant in a tray'. While the tree itself contributes to one half of the composition, the pot completes the overall image. The 'bonsai' in its literal sense is judged by the visual impact of both the tree and the pot.
Unfortunately, choosing and locating the correct, or the best, pot to plant your tree into is not easy. While a well-chosen pot will enhance a bonsai and strengthen a design, a poorly chosen or unsuitable design will actually lessen the impact of the tree. Ultimately, until the 'right' pot is found the tree will never reach its full potential as a bonsai.
A pot can be expensive investment for your tree; buying an unsuitable pot for your tree can mean having to find a more suitable pot in the future.
Tips for choosing the pot:
Choice 1: Pot Dimensions
Choice 2: Pot Shape
Choice 3: Pot Colour
Choice 4: Pot Texture

Thanks.
