I am new to the forum and have just started my first few Bonsai trees. I now have 12.
I tried to start my first one almost 2 years ago. The idea came about when my father passed away in November 2006. Because he died in Australia and I would probably never get to visit his grave, I decided to plant a tree or shrub that I could enjoy in his memory. Right now I rent and I got to thinking if I move it may die when I dig it up and transplant it. So I decided on bonsai. I wanted to do wisteria because of the color and I knew it took to bonsai fairly well. My first 3 all died. This spring I found the perfect specimen. It now looks great. I will post a picture soon. Well, once that one took off, I realized I had been bitten by the bug. I dug up my Japanese Maple and bonsai(d) that. I have since bought several seedlings on line and some end of season stuff from nurseries and everything is doing great.
Now winter is looming and panic is starting to set in, as to where they will winter over.
This is where you guys come in. I need all the advice I can get. I live in Utah in a zone 5, with lots of snow. I would appreciate any information and previous experience you can give me.

Thanks

Hello Lily
This is an old thread, but just in case you haven't been turned completly off of bonsai forums, and possibly Bonsai alltogether.
How are your trees doing so far this winter?

I have them buried on the west side of the house, underneath the kitchen window. I looked at them the other day, after most of the snow had melted and they look good. They are showing the very early signs of the new buds that will appear in the spring. I have 4 others that are in a friends garage, I won't know about those until spring. Then I have more in the house, they are doing good. The only real concern I have is the European Olive which is in the house. When I first got it, it had 3 branches covered in leaves. It now only has one branch with any leaves on it. The other 2 branches appear to have died. I am hoping what is left will recover and somehow flourish. I will be glad to see spring and see who survived and who did not.

hello hello it's winter here in australia but the warmth of this winter has made lots of my trees start shooting like spring.
have you got a pic of this poor olive tree?

It has put on considerable growth over the summer. I have deliberately allowed it to become slightly overgrown. I want to wait until next spring and see where it;s next growth comes out before I decide how to prune and wire it. It does look really healthy. The only problem it has right now, is some of the leaves have notches out of them. I guess the leaf cutter bees liked the looks of the leaves.
I have tried to attach a picture but I am not sure if it landed in the right place.
