Hello! Taylor here, 23 from Ohio,

Recently received a Juniper as a Christmas gift and looking to become apart of the bonsai world. Ever since i was young watching Mr. Miyagi prune bonsai's in Karate Kid or Jett from Cowboy Bebop accidentally clip an entire branch off one, i have wanted to learn The art of bonsai. Very new to the art, but hoping to acquire info and friends through this site.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Many a Juniper has died because it was treated as an indoor plant. Next winter, find a southern or western place on the side of the house, or in an unheated garage or shed and let it winter over. If you put it in the shed or garage you will still need to water it occasionally. If outside, it will receive moisture from rain and melted snow. Be sure to protect the pot and roots from freezing. I dig holes on the west side against the house. The holes are the same depth as the pot. This year I wrapped newspaper around the pot, put it in the hole then filled the soil in around it. Then I put leaves in the newspaper that sat above pot level, then covered the whole area with leaves. When the snow comes it forms a layer of insulation. This year we are having a particularly cold winter in Utah, so I am glad I took the extra precautions.
