I am looking for good sources in the US that sell pregerminated tree seed. I follow all of the rules for stratification with no luck. Three years ago I found a source that sells pregerminated Japanese Red Maples. I ordered 25 pregerminated seed. I only lost one due to an accident. The trees are growing beautifully. But, when I ordered tree seed from bonsai sites they do not germinate. Could someone help, please? I have been working with bonsai for 20 years. But, there is something special about growing a tree from seed. I have 45 green leaf japanese maples that I grew from sprouted seeds given to me by a coworker in my school. It has been quite rewarding watching the progress over the years. Pregerminated tree seed that I would like to have are Trident Maple, Zelkova, and European Hornbeam. Thanks for any help. Papa
p.s. I really enjoy this great website. Last edited by Papa : 07-08-2010 at 02:31 AM. |

Hi Papa, I have a similar dilemma, I have yet to be able to sprout a seed. A great way to get your hands on some new material is to go out and dig up some seedlings that mother nature germinated for you. In town most seedlings will just get mowed or trampled and never survive.
One place I was planning on trying out this spring is mussers forests, they sell young seedlings from a few inches up to a few feet tall. The more you buy the cheaper they are. Hope you find what you need!
